Monoprints and Calliographs
from Jack Pachuta
|
|
Wisconsin artist Jack Pachuta takes a non-traditional approach to his subject matter. Combining printmaking techniques with the craftsmanship of pencil and ink renderings, his works are known for their vibrant colors and unique textures. Jack says, "An artist’s challenge is to portray the usual in unusual ways and to make people see what they might not otherwise see." Jack met his English wife, Renira, over breakfast "on holiday" in Portugal while they were both living and working in Germany. They were married on Shakespeare’s birthday in 1976 and now have two daughters, a cat and a house that borders a Christmas tree farm. A member of both the Cedarburg Artists Guild and the League of Milwaukee Artists, Jack has lived in Cedarburg since 1979. His works have been displayed in galleries throughout southeastern Wisconsin and he is a frequent exhibitor at art shows in the Midwest. Jack is also a professional speaker and murder mystery writer with consulting clients and a cadre of whodunit aficionados on six continents. |

Stalking This image of a Native American wearing a bearskin and stalking in the winter emerged from the background after a variety of objects and unique shapes were positioned on inked plates and sent through a press. A close look reveals many textures and colors that interweave and combine to create the entire piece. |
Coyote
Shaman The fur and leather textures on this image of a Native American shaman were on the inked background when it off of the press. The image then was designed to utilize these textures in designing the form of the shaman. The cougar also resulted from serendipity as its shaped was plainly visible on the plate.

Byzantine This monoprint captures a Madonna and Child in a style reminiscent of the Eastern European Byzantine iconic artistry. In a non-traditional touch, the halo encircles both images and seems to look into another world. The texture on the Madonna's robe adds an additional unique touch to the total piece.

Water The textures and format of this work are similar to Japanese art in which nearby objects are large and faraway objects are decreasingly smaller. The "Z" shape of the water likewise mimics a typical layout of that style of art. A close look uncovers the many textures that comprise the entire image. |
Winter
Birdbrain The winter woodland setting of this monoprint is one of four seasonal environments in which this birdwatcher was placed. The other three use different hues and textures, as well as additional species of birds to create unique pieces of art from the same piece of line art. |

Watch This scene of a blacksmith at work incorporates textures and colors reminiscent of a 19th-century blacksmith shop. The form is highlighted by light streaming through a window in which a raven is perched, creating shapes and shadows in the shop environment. |

High This monoprint depicts two mountain climbers with a volcanic peak in the background. The piece is done in warm tones with the bright white of the climbers wardrobe serving as a stark contrast to the rest of the landscape. |
Vow This monoprint of a Native American, looking to the heavens atop a mesa incorporates a shield and feathers as a backdrop to the "vow" being made. The muted tones of the landscape give the entire piece the look of art rendered on buckskin. |

Work Completed at the Plein Air Art Competition during Cedarburg's Strawberry in 2006, this pen and ink rendering depicts blacksmith Dan Nauman at work in his Cedarburg shop. The distinct colorful forms were achieved by rubbing the art paper between two inked plates. |
